I also know that the POH is full of this kind of data - we can just shove that into a giant database.īut wait, I hear you ask, how do we account for all the things that aren’t in the POH? What about all the situations that are in the middle of, or outside of our data? Well, that’s okay. For example, I know that 29.7" of throttle, 2380 RPM, and pitching for 70kts in a DA20 A1 weighing 1500lbs will give me about a 700ft/min climb rate on a standard day. The lookup-table approach (most famously used by FSX) is to take known data about how an aircraft will perform and create a database of all of these numbers.

For those who already know this, feel free to skip to ahead. This is how a simulator “works out” how an aircraft will respond to given inputs. I’ll begin with some background about two different approaches to flight modelling that flight simulators use: the lookup-table and blade-element modelling.

My complaints with the simulation in FS2020 come down to two things: the realism of the flight model and the realism of the systems modelling. Sadly, the visuals are where the good things end for me. This is my favourite detail in any flight simulator - ever. Critically though, you feel, thanks to the photo-realistic rendering, that it really is the Golden Ears bridge, and you respect it in a way you don’t respect the “road across the water” in XP11.

Take the Golden Ears bridge across Vancouver’s Pitt River for example. It probably won’t look the same as the real structure, but it’s good enough to make you aware of its presence and feel, viscerally, that you’re really there.

The algorithms have been trained to put the right type of building in the right place: if there’s a high-rise, it’ll put a high-rise. FS2020 fills in buildings in a way that looks believable. A major pitfall of the default and aftermarket scenery packages for other simulators is that outside of specially modeled areas, like cities or airports, most of the scenery is flat or randomly dotted with structures. This is largely down to the use of satellite imagery - OrbX’s scenery for FSX and XP11 are similarly accurate, but what sets FS2020 apart is the use of machine learning algorithms to “map” terrain data to structures that look right. The same place (or lack thereof) in XP11… I’ll also add that I’m running no control “assists” to speak of.

Computing-wise, my PC will comfortably run FS2020 on high settings at 60FPS. I’ve used this setup extensively on FSX and XP11. I’m using a full hardware controller setup: T16000M joystick, Thrustmaster pedals, and a six-lever CH throttle quadrant. People often cite hardware limitations as the reason for people’s “underwhelming” impressions of FS2020, so I’ll state mine to address that possibility. I’m also a former aerospace engineering student, and have been a long-time user of Flight Simulator X and X-Plane 11. I’ve flown the DA20 A1 and C1, as well as the DA42 (including 20 hours in the DSim-42 simulator). I have about 160 total hours, around 80 of which are PIC. I’m a qualified SMEL-rated PPL holder, and trainee MEI and CPL student. I hope sharing my experience and opinions will be informative to those who are looking for answers to those questions. But when I was weighing up whether to buy this game, I found scant little on the criticisms I give here - about the realism of FS2020 as simulation platform. Controversial, perhaps, given the plaudits showered upon it. As a simulator I would ascribe it phrases like, “inaccurate”, “insufficient” and “a step backwards”. And it very much is all of these things, but only in three respects: its scenery, atmospheric modelling, and rendering. You’ll probably also have heard it associated with phrases like “game changing”, “revolutionary”, and “universally acclaimed”. If you’re a pilot, sim-enthusiast, gamer, or aviation fan, you’ll probably have heard of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.
